Examples of several major unexpected events that sent shock waves throughout the financial community have been:

-    1982 Mexican Peso devaluation;
-    1987 stock market crash knows as “Black Monday”;
-    1989 USA Savings and Loan Crisis;
-    1998 Russian Ruble devaluation;
-    1998 $125 billion collapse of Hedge Fund Long Term Capital Management;
-    2006 collapse of Hedge Fund Amaranth with losses of $5.85 billion.

In 1994 Bank J.P. Morgan developed a risk metrics model known as Value-At-Risk or VaR.  While VaR is considered the industry standard of risk measurement, it has its drawbacks.  VaR can measure total dollar value of a funds risk exposure within a certain  level of confidence, usually 95% or 99%.  What it cannot do, is predict when a triggering event will occur or the magnitude of the subsequent fallout.  For some company’s and funds, a steep decline or protracted recession can be devastating.  Even forcing some un-hedged firms into bankruptcy.  A triggering event can have a ripple effect forcing people out of work and economies into recession effectively putting more people out of work.  No person and no economy is immune.

If you own a mutual fund, chances are your fund is un-hedged.  Until recently, mutual fund legislation prevented mutual funds from hedging.  Many jurisdictions have repealed this rule however mutual fund managers have been slow or decided to continue with ‘business as usual”.  The reason is that most investors of mutual funds are unsophisticated and do not understand the hedging process and may re-deem their money from an investment strategy they do not understand.

Hedge funds on the other hand do not have these restraints.  Investors are more sophisticated and are more open to the nature of hedge fund strategies.  Some of which are not disclosed due to a fear of piracy by competing hedge fund managers.

Risk reduction solutions are not complicated but do require the services of a professional who understands the process.  This is the role of Commodity Trading Advisor firms such as Genuine Trading Solutions, also known as a CTA.  President, Dwayne Strocen states that while most CTA’s are hedge fund managers, few specialize in risk management analytics.  Our focus is on the analysis of solutions to reduce or eliminate market and / or operational risk.  No matter the role, all Commodity Trading Advisors are specialists in the derivatives market.

The reasons for this were plentiful:

• The US economy appeared on the verge of collapse.
• The US has a record high deficit (it still does).
• The global economy seemed to be improving in the second half of 2009, leading to a greater appetite for risk and people leaving the dollar for the EURO.
• Interest rates in the US were at an all time low.

However, it seems that the tables have turned momentarily, at least in this month of January. The Dollar is on the verge of breaking the 1.4000 support and the EURO is the currency that’s feeling the pressure.

My euro prediction for 2010 is that the European currency will be vulnerable throughout the year and that the USD is likely to rise in relation to it. Naturally, I am no prophet and you can make your own prediction, but this is what I think for the following reasons:

1. The European Union has too many members who are in serious financial problems. All these problems weigh down on the Euro.

2. Countries like Greece and Spain, with serious financial problems and skyrocket unemployment rates are competing with countries like the Netherlands which seems to have weathered the crisis easily. How these countries come to one monetary policy is beyond me. You just can’t please them all so a compromise policy is arrived at, something which won’t be optimal for the Euro.

3. It seems that the US has begun to recover from the crisis and there are many who believe that interest rates in the US will rise soon. This will lead to an increase in the USD’s value. This is probably what caused the EUR/USD decline that we’ve seen in the past 3 weeks.

4. Now that the US seems to not be on the verge of collapse, attention has turned to Europe. Some of the countries in the EU are in serious trouble and will get a lot more press and media attention. This will lead to more fear on the side of traders and a greater abandonment of the Euro.

All I can say is that Steve Nison’s materials are amazing. I have bought 4 of his workshops from his website. 3 on Japanese Candlestick techniques and trading and the last one…THE BEST in my opinion…Profiting In Forex.

Profiting In Forex taught me proper use of candlesticks with Forex. So many other candlestick products out there focus solely on stocks, futures, equities, etc. Not Forex and the subtleties are small but VERY important to know! He also teaches you how NOT to use candles, when not to take trades…teaches you proper entry and EXITS too! He does not teach a ’system’. He teaches candlestick techniques. But I still was able to craft my own BASIC system using nothing more than candles and 1 indicator.

Steve makes a wild boast that other candle gurus get candles and the trading techniques wrong. At first I thought he was being a salesman but he was really CORRECT! I have checked out material by Bigalow and others. They really do get it wrong! Of course, I can only speak from the perspective of a Forex trader.

Spend your money on Mr. Nison’s materials. His books are nice but they do not cover Forex….and honestly…the Forex DVD workshop will be enough…it is the most up to date source. Also, the DVD workshop includes materials not found in any of his books. I know…I have read his books!

WARNING – I did not just watch the DVD’s once and become successful. I watched all 4 of them (over 6 hours of material) at least 5 or 6 times, took notes, used a DEMO account and did not trade real money until I had his teachings and disciplines down solid. I highly recommend you do the same too!

Forex robot software is making waves.  They are providing numerous benefits to traders who are venturing into the automated trading arena.  What is making Forex robots so successful?  Forex robots are also known as Expert Advisors or EAs.  This is a fitting monicker since they are acting in the capacity of a true expert, advising on which trades to make and subsequently executing those trades automatically.  

As an expert advisor, Forex robots provide advice and information about when to execute a forex trade.  The expert advisor will interpret and identify the trading signals that are derived from technically analyzing the Forex market.  

What do they do?

• Forex robots provides indicators when a trader would enter or exit a deal.  Some traders would like to be notified first before the robot enters a deal and the trader would manually enter the deal or exit from it.  But the EA could be programmed so that it could automatically enter a transaction.  The trader might also be responsible for providing the structure from where certain trade information and signals would be determined, but most expert advisors come with preloaded settings that can be run right ‘out of the box.’ 

• Aside from entering or exiting a transaction, the forex robot can also be programmed to perform trade tasks like scaling in and out of positions, trailing stops, risk management and identifying market conditions that suggest it would be better to not take a trade.

• Forex robots automatically apply your money management strategy to their program and incorporate it in the trades that they do.  Money management is all about determining how much of your capital you are willing to risk per trade, or the risk factor involved in trading.  It’s importance cannot be underestimated.  Some traders would not include money management and would go for a free strategy.  But this could be a costly mistake, so it is better to make sure that the Forex robot already has a money management system in place. Some forex robots allow the operator to input algorithms in the system to integrate their own management style.   Ignoring money management guidelines is the number one reason that retail forex traders fail.

• Forex robots are also capable of placing, changing and removing stop losses and take profit limits.  Most also allow for the manual placement of entry orders, providing flexibility to those traders who incorporate a hybrid strategy of manual and automated trading.

To operate a Forex robot or an EA, it is necessary to possess a computer, stable internet connection and at least some general knowledge on how Forex trading works. You would also have to sign up for an account with a Forex broker, this is where the expert advisor will make its trades through.   After setting up an account, you can get the Forex robot from a manufacturer.  The EA would be downloaded to your computer and would make trades for you.

But there is another challenge when using a forex robot.  Although they can do the trade for you 24 hours a day and 5 days a week, it is impossible to keep your computer working for that long, and the risk exists that an unexpected crash of the computer system running the robot could cause catastrophic losses.  So, there are some companies that offer virtual hosting where traders can continue trading while giving their computers and trading robot the needed rest, eliminating the risk of sudden power loss.

These service providers would just require necessary information so that they can host your trading platform.  They would be providing you would a username and password to have access to your server.  When looking for services like this, it is important to have a demo account first where you can check the service before foregoing into trading real money and account. 

But as reiterated by experts, having an automated trading system, in this case the Forex robot, is not an assurance of succeeding in trading and becoming a millionaire.  It still relies on your trading skills, knowledge and mindset.
